Meditative State

One of the daunting things about meditation is that we don’t know what it is supposed to feel like. Sure, we “know” we are supposed to clear our minds and just breath, or whatever. But what does your body feel like? Does it feel different than just sitting still? Do you transcend into some spiritual plane?

Side bar: I’ve recently became an Add Heart Facilitator. This company designed a device that measures your heart rate and rhythm to alert you when you are in a state of mind heart coherence. What I found interesting is the state I call a “meditative state” is mind heart coherence.

This is what it feels like to me. It’s like if you take a deep breath and then let it out - that feeling right at the bottom of the out breath there is a feeling of sort of emptiness. You’ve let out your air and with it your anxiety, stress, and thoughts. There is this second right before you inhale when your energy sort of falls under you and bottoms out in your stomach. When your energy is resting in your bottom half and settling there for a moment. Your shoulders fall and your whole body sort of pauses. It’s an empty space right before you inhale. That is the meditative state.

The trick is to keep that feeling through long, even inhales and exhales. To keep your mind coming back to that feeling even when it wanders, because it will wander. It’s noticing when your are back into your chest and your head so you take another big breath and let it out to get back to that state. It’s about not being upset if you barely got there during your meditation session. It’s about noticing that you did get there for 2 seconds and knowing those 2 seconds of coherence really made a difference. And next session you can aim for 3 seconds.
