80's Movies

I was thinking about movies from my childhood last night and fell into a little bit of a rabbit hole listing out the movies I remember seeing in the theater or that I watched repeatedly at home, and looking up the parental guidance ratings. It’s interesting to think that the PG-13 rating was only adopted in 1984 or that a PG rating in the 80’s would garner a PG-13 nowadays. I never thought about parental guidance ratings until I became a parent. I still don’t trust the system completely and make judgement calls based on actual content, but it’s nice to have a guide.

Based on the list, I’m not sure if my dad ever thought about parental guidance ratings. I’m not sure if it was just the times or because there wasn’t a mom around to chide him for letting us watch inappropriate content. I do know that I watched so many horror movies as a kid that I had quite a few nightmares. I didn’t even realize until my early 20’s that I don’t like scary movies.

The most surprising part of this nostalgia is that I’m able to look back on my childhood without much of an emotional response. In the past when I would think back on my childhood I would slowly find myself surrounded by self-pity and emotional pain. Fond memories would intermingle with sadness and I’d start to feel sorrow for the little girl that endured it and for the parents that didn’t know how to give her what she needed. I’d have to remind myself that I did the best I could and that I wouldn’t be here today without those painful experiences. But my feelings have shifted since doing Psych-K around my childhood. In a recent session I went on a healing journey from birth to my Saturn returns. I didn’t have an opportunity to truly understand how powerful the change was until the movie rabbit hole last night. I’m very grateful for this healing modality and look forward to attending a Pysch-K workshop to learn how to facilitate change for myself and for others.
